Random brief WHU players from the past you liked
|
Just watching us vs Burnley from 2009-10 on BT sport and Guillermo Franco is playing.
Had forgotten about him, but really liked him as a player. Only here short term but seemed committed, good team man, strong in the air and not a bad player considering. Scored 5 in 23 as well.

I liked gavin williams when we got him in the championship. And mcanuff. Neither were really given enough opportunity by pards
Also Adam nowland who needed to ‘count himself lucky’ to be with us always looked like he had something about him
But the one player who I did like and was surprised we moved on was Luke chadwick - I could see where the Beckham comparisons came from with him in that wage wasn’t the quickest or trickiest but his crossing was really good. Our first season in the championship he must have got shed loads of assists

Jimmy "the tree" Quinn 18 goals in 47 starts......it seems like a life time since we had a striker with that ratio

When we were in the Championship we bought Sam Baldock and another lad whose name escapes me. They both did a very good job scoring a few but we shipped them out at the end of the season.

I guess with Curbishley having seemingly given up then Merv has to find something to do. Those caps don’t buy themselves

Bit unrelated, as he played for us loads and was a club hero.. But just randomly read that Mervyn Day is now a scout covering the London area.
Good news, eh!?
Except that his employers are Glasgow Rangers. Hahahah. 'Not run like a circus anymore..."

Johnny Ayris is still playing 5-a-side (NOT walking football). You'd struggle to meet a nicer bloke.

A good shout, I also liked Jennings and Keith Robson and started to head the ball more when I played because of Billy.
For a bloke of slight stature and being 5’9” tall, he was an excellent header of the ball. I remember him scoring on his debut against Sheffield United, it’s a pity we lost. It was also his two away goals at Den Haag that gave us a chance in the second leg.
As an aside, one of my mates at the time lived next door to a hairdresser and Billy was always popping around there to have his bouffant teased and flicked, I guess it was all that heading of the ball 😂
